BRINGING YOUR NEW KITTEN HOME

kittenbowl.gif (640 bytes)There are some things you will need to have on hand before you bring your new kitten home. You will need cat dishes for both food and water, I use stone crocks bought from the pet store. Normally they are used for cockers. This type of bowl is heavy and prevents the kittens from tipping over the bowl. This kitten has been raised on premium kitten food. Both Iams kitten Eukanuba and Hills S/D Growth. These I fell are the best foods on the market.

kittyball.gif (3303 bytes)Cat toys. Watch out for toys that may have pieces that come off of it, like mylar strips, kittens are much like young toddlers, everything goes into their mouth.

abaskat2.gif (2615 bytes)You will need a cat carrier. If the new kitten will be shipped to you, this carriers must be airline approved. I ship kittens in Veri Kennels if they are being flown. A carrier can be used not only for getting your kitten home safely, but also for trips to the vet and anywhere else you want to take your cat. For this propose I will included a kennel cab or pet taxi kennel. On your drive home, leave your kitten in her carrier. This is safer for both you and your new kitten.

a_pacifier.gif (4952 bytes)Even though your kitten has had all of her shots for a year.It should be taken to he Vet within 72 hours of getting your kitten, all kittens are given a clean bill of health before they leave our cattery, but the stress of going to a new home may cause the kitten to have a bit of a cold. This is normal and the kitten should be fine is a week to ten days. Your vet will be able to determine this on kitty's first visit.

LITTER BOX

a_sandcastle.gif (24628 bytes)
Litter boxes are not as bad as some may think. You can either get a regular litter box, one with a hood or what I use, the kind with a lip around the top. I place the whole liter box inside of a plastic trash bag and the lip helps hold the "make shift plastic liner" in place. Then place new papers in the bottom to help not only protect liner but will help to extend litter( You do not use as much to fill the box this way.). Put in enough litter to not only cover the news paper but enough for kitten to dig and cover poop. The litter boxes should be changed daily, I am able to do this in just a few minutes a day do to the self made liner is also a self made container. Just slip it out from under the box and toss bag and all in trash. You should have at least one litter box for each cat in your house.

Last year I started using a new type of litter. It is a wood based litter that smells like new construction. Litter Pine can be found at you local pet store. I go to petsmart, cost is about 50 cents a pound but I feel it is well worth the cost. Much like a good food goes a long way, this litter really does help out with the cat box odor.  I normally put just enough in to cover the bottom and I dump each box once a day. If you only have one kitten using the box this will not be necessary. But it will still need to be scooped daily.

Grooming

Bombay's are easy to groom. A brushing several times a week with an old fashioned nylon brush is sufficient. If you really want to work for even better results, get a small rectangular curry brush. Finally wipe down with a silk scarf. Your kitten has had it's claws clipped weekly. Get a small pair of nail clippers, I use the fingernail type for safety. Press each toe to extend the claw. Clip the white part. The pink is the quick and will hurt the kitten, if you cut into it. Bathe your kitten if she gets dirty or has an oily feel to the coat. Your kitten has been bathed as a young kitten and should not be hard to handle. Make sure you use a product approved for cats.. It does take a few days for the natural oils to come back into the coat. I do not use a conditioner afterwards due to the chemicals it leaves on the coat.
